FAQs
What is Haemodialysis?

Haemodialysis is a medical procedure used to treat kidney failure. It filters waste, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood using a machine.

1. Blood Access: Blood is drawn from the patient’s body through a surgically created access point, typically in the arm. This access point is called a fistula or graft.

2. Filtering Process: The blood is pumped through a dialyzer, also known as an artificial kidney. The dialyzer has a special membrane that filters out waste products
and excess fluids from the blood.

3. Dialysate: A fluid called dialysate, which contains water, electrolytes, and other substances, flows on the other side of the membrane. This fluid helps to draw out the
waste and toxins from the blood through diffusion and osmosis.

4. Return of Cleaned Blood: The cleaned blood is then returned to the patient’s body.

Each session typically lasts approximately 3- 4 hours and is usually performed three times a week, though the frequency can vary depending on the patient’s needs.

Dialysis helps to:
– Remove waste products and excess fluids from the blood.
 – Maintain proper electrolyte balance.
 – Control blood pressure.
Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for people with severe kidney failure, but it doesn’t cure kidney disease. It’s often used as a long-term treatment or as a temporary measure while waiting for a kidney transplant.
